How to download clips in audio only format
The easiest way for me is with the premade batch files: https://github.com/Schytheron/youtube-dl-batch/blob/master/ytdlAdvanced.bat You can choose video or/and audio, and choose the quality, if you want the best quality audio, then do bestaudio ans you can do bestaudio[ext=mp3] for only mp3 or any other extensions

Conversion Scripts (Semi-Shameful Plug ?
Hello, sorry if plugging is not allowed here, but I don't recognise how to spread the word around. I am creating some automated (well, semi-automated; its a manual process in the beginning (if making your own scripts), unless you use the scripts I have already created for select content) conversion scripts that will make use of various open source software (such as the amazing FFmpeg, which is the backbone of the scripts), for use with Kodi, VLC Media Player and such. I am wanting to manually make scripts for converting music, and videos, so once I am done making a conversion script for a show per se, all someone has to do is double click the script and it will automatically convert their content along with the metadata you or I have specified (if your using the script generator included in the repo); as well as making it cross-platform (eventually). I'm sure this has been done before, but here is the GitHub if your interested in it: https://github.com/OrdinaryCarrot16/ffmpeg-conversion-scripts I'd say its still not perfect for a final encode, as I still haven't even gotten to adding filtering to the mix. But I hope you enjoy it, or that it will be useful to someone once I get to adding more scripts for content, and common features.
