Turns out the situation isn't as dire as I thought, perhaps because the Haskell ecosystem has matured a little in recent years in terms of backwards compatibility (Cabal 3 being a major, but vital, exception): https://github.com/wxHaskell/wxHaskell/pull/40

How is it going with desktop apps nowadays? What happened to wxHaskell?
I was looking for it yesterday and think I saw your issue on source forge, but it looks like they moved their repo to GitHub https://github.com/wxHaskell/wxHaskell , it seems to be almost building except for some minor changes needed .

TIL about -Wunused-packages
Apparently not. Here -Wall was already enabled but these warnings were not emitted prior to adding -Wunused-packages (at least as of GHC 8.10.7)
