Can someone please explain amiibo's to me?
Since Amiibos are NFC tags you can make your own using Ntag 215 cards (or coins if you prefer) either using an NFC capable phone with the Tagmo app or by using a modded (new model) 3DS with the Thenaya homebrew.

Credible leaker (with a pretty good track record) says that there will be a new collection of amiibo cards (acnh), fan favorite characters will be back, and that mario's (rip) anniversary won't be the only one they are celebrating in game.
Here's the link to it. I actually didn't realize there's a .3dsx file, so you can just use the homebrew channel if you don't want CFW for some reason. Also, I was slightly wrong, you can use an OG 3ds as well.
