Not sure if you've seen xidlehook but it works well and is also written rust. I see it hasn't been updated in a while, maybe it can inspire you.

Dim brightness before sleep with DPMS
Could likely use https://github.com/jD91mZM2/xidlehook to dim it just before suspend, then watch xprintidle until it goes below 1000 to show that you're active again, and bring the brightness up
