wayvnc VS wlroots

Yeah. On Wlroots or Sway, we can setup virtual displays pretty easily (swaymsg create_output, done). Then both the other person and yourself connect to the wayvnc vnc server server to see what's over there.

There's wayvnc.

It says on their GitHub page that "Gnome, KDE, and Weston are not supported". What does that mean?

I thought this existed in the form of wayvnc but from their README it seems they don't support the popular desktop environments (GNOME, KDE).

Not sure if I would call it hassle free, but wayvnc isn't that hard to set up.

On wayvnc git master and sway 1.8 (or git master), you can script things so that a "virtual" display gets created automatically when someone connects to VNC, and removed when they disconnect.

The script in the PR does something a bit different, but it's only an example and can be modified to do what I described in the first paragraph.

No - it's not X, it's doesn't share a screen in the way X does.

That said... if this is a shoddy attempt at a "gotcha" style question - Screen sharing and remote desktop are both supported.

Which mostly just works as long as you have Pipewire and xdg-desktop-portal-kde installed (the base plasma-wayland session usually includes them)

This one is a bit less polished - some users still have problems with keyboard input, depending on the distro and other installed packages.

For Sway:

xdg-desktop-portal-wlr works just fine for screen sharing, and you can use https://github.com/any1/wayvnc for VNC access (including having a completely headless machine).

Even then, "tinywl" which aims to be a "minimum viable product" Wayland compositor based on wlroots is almost 1k lines:

As if not having new features added for 2 years makes it stop working? barrier is perfectly fine on normal linux desktop installs. I actually use synergy 1.x personally which has been "unmaintained" for much, much longer. Except synergy 1.x will compile and run on anything from windows 98 to ubuntu 5 to debian 12. You can't get a waynergy or inputleap to compile on an OS more than 2 years old. And even then, as you say, it's crapshoot if the particular wayland will have libei; many like sway are actively hostile to it and never will: https://github.com/swaywm/wlroots/issues/2378

It looks like they actually patched it to filter those modes out, so presumably it worked out of the box and was considered undesirable: https://github.com/swaywm/wlroots/issues/3038

I haven't experienced any of those. The video game performance hit may be due to vsync, but I don't play games so I haven't noticed.

You can however use tinywl. It is an example Wayland compositor that can't do more than displaying one application.

Sway/wlroots has implemented this, but I can't find any discussion for KDE.

wlroots is archived on github. Is it abandoned? Just saying, that only means they moved git hosts :-D

A lot of compositors are based no the wlroots lirbary. So they are still sharing the development effort and have a common base, its just in the form of a library rather than a display server.
