  • wayvnc

A VNC server for wlroots based Wayland compositors

Project mention: What is the best remote desktop solution? | reddit.com/r/swaywm | 2021-09-23

For sway there is a vnc server called wayvnc. You can set it up to mirror your normal session. Alternatively you can start a second sway instance in headless mode and connect wayvnc to that

  • swaylock

    Screen locker for Wayland

Project mention: Can KScreenLocker and SDDM merged into one single program? | reddit.com/r/kde | 2022-01-09

I meant that a standard of some sort is probably needed to handle both the desktop environment telling the display manager to lock the screen AND allowing said display manager to take over the screen and lock it. On Wayland at the moment I'm not aware of any screen locker that isn't part of the DE itself that works on GNOME or KDE (I only know of swaylock and waylock, and both require protocols that are only implemented by wlroots based compositors, at least according to Waylock's readme).

  • kiwmi

    A fully programmable Wayland Compositor

  • swaybg

    Wallpaper tool for Wayland compositors

Project mention: swaybg alone eating up almost 500mb ram for some reason! are there any alternatives? | reddit.com/r/swaywm | 2021-09-05

What version of swaybg are you on? There were some changes in swaybg in 1.1 https://github.com/swaywm/swaybg/commits/master

  • cagebreak

Cagebreak: A Wayland Tiling Compositor Inspired by Ratpoison

    Project mention: Wayland alternatives | reddit.com/r/herbstluftwm | 2021-10-13

There's cagebreak, wich is inspired by ratpoison. It's different yo hlwm, but it has the same concept of containers, but every container only have the "max" layout

  • japokwm

  • wdisplays

    Mirror of cyclopsian/wdisplays (by artizirk)

Project mention: Setting resolution on Wayland | reddit.com/r/archlinux | 2021-08-30

    Try wdisplays.

  • wl-gammactl

Project mention: Setting Contrast Value in Wayland | reddit.com/r/linuxquestions | 2022-01-22

However, this does not work in Wayland since it obviously belongs to the X Window System. I started searching the web for a possible solution and found wl-gammactl, which is a GUI for wlroots (https://github.com/mischw/wl-gammactl) and the gnome-gamma-tool (https://github.com/zb3/gnome-gamma-tool), but neither of them seemed to work because of missing dependencies, which can't be installed or invalid version numbers of required packages (e.g. found 1.20 but need: '>=1.23'). When attempting to build the gnome-gamma-tool, the following error message appears (despite Colord being installed):

  • wlanthy

Experimental, simple Wayland-native Japanese input method

    Project mention: Wlanthy toggle script | reddit.com/r/linuxquestions | 2022-01-07

In an effort to replace X tools with wayland equivalents, I've switched from using fcitx and mozc to using wlanthy. On the repo's readme, they recommend binding a keyboard shortcut to a toggle script. I tried making one that uses pgrep which doesn't work

  • epd-wm

Wayland compositor/window manager that outputs to IT8951 E-Paper displays (WIP).

    Project mention: 4.4 | reddit.com/r/eink | 2021-02-13

Overall if you want a DIY e-reader, your best bet is to pick a low power board that supports Linux, run the most barebones system you can on it, and reduce its power usage by aggressive means (underclocking, undervolting, "deep sleep" by turning it off after X minutes of inactivity). Then for the eink part, use a barebones desktop environment, combined with a window manager meant for eink, such as epd-wm. After that, slap an ebook reader software like Foliate on top, and you're good to go.
