Set a small ubuntu box next to your NAS, hookup the NAS as iSCSI (with all auth tricks applied - 100's of howto's online) and release tdewin/veeamhubrepo: quick linux immutable repository (github.com) - works as a charm.

Ubuntu + Timothy Dewin's script . Hands down the easiest way to go.

If you want to lab up a hardened repository, go with Ubuntu as the distro of choice and leverage this script that basically does everything for you and you'll be able to mess around with it without having to bang your head against the wall setting it up manually when you're getting your feet wet. Admittedly, it's not THAT difficult, but even someone who works at Veeam I managed to miss one small step when I was following along in the User Guide and made me spend way more time than I'd like to admit trying to figure out what was wrong.

I work for a VASP and with hardened Linux repository our choice is Ubuntu 20.04. Veeam even has this script which will allow you to do the hardening / XFS from a wizard. https://github.com/tdewin/veeamhubrepo

I'd echo everything Gostev just said and also encourage you to lab up a Linux server (recommend Ubuntu if you're coming at it with zero Linux experience) and see for yourself how easy it actually is. Yes, Linux can seem quite intimidating, especially when you see some Linux guru just whizzing through the bash console at a million miles per hour (Linux admins loveeeeeeeee to show off their l33t ski11z in the console 😁), but in reality it's not nearly as intimidating as it seems. Not to mention, when it comes to Linux + Veeam in regards to immutability, if you're wanting to dip your toes in the water then check out this super simple and very handy tool that's on VeeamHub which came courtesy of u/tdewin that'll basically do everything for you to setup a Hardened Linux Repository in a matter of minutes. While it's important to understand that the script (and everything found on VeeamHub) is not officially supported and all usage is at your own risk, it's a great resource and comes in especially handy in situations like this where you can lab something up.

For larger tenants, I don't see this as a viable solution. There are some scripts on GitHub though, that might help. Here and here. Has anyone tried these? Guess it'd be possible to create a Task Scheduler task that'd fire up either of these scripts every day and add the necessary exclusions.

You're welcome :) It has proven to be extremely valuable in the month or so since I started using it. It's a very modified version of another script that I pulled from the Veeam Github (VeeamHub). I just tweaked it to be a bit simpler in a handful of ways. All credit to my colleague for sharing his script because I never would've taken that much time to have written all the main guts of that script 😂 But I can sure as hell take what was already done and run with it to produce something I find to be more useful.

Honestly, your best bet is to hit up our Veeam PowerShell forums or VeeamHub where there's a ton of people who've already worked out ways to do what you're trying to accomplish.

Have you considered doing a pull request to have it added to VeeamHub? If not, you should! You have no idea how many people open cases requesting help with "how to run a report to find out X/Y/Z". This would help a LOT of people!
