PS1 Programming Course with MIPS Assembly and C
There are homebrew tools that can be installed on a PS1 memory card [1] and allow for executables to be loaded from a host machine into RAM through the serial port on the back of the console, in a similar way to what Sony's official Net Yaroze loader did back in the day. These tools can also use undocumented CD-ROM drive commands to disable region checks without the need for a modchip, provide semihosting (host filesystem access) and so on.
On the PS2 it's slightly more complicated, as there is no way to launch the "native" PS1 backwards compatibility mode other than to use a modchip (or firmware mod on some models) and burn the executable onto a disc; the serial port is not exposed either, making debugging much harder. It can still be done, but it's much easier to just use an actual PS1.

Tonyhax isn’t opening on PSX (SCPH-9001)
I just tried it myself, using an unmodded SCPH-9001, and original CD (Tomb Raider II, NTSC:U/C to be precise) and a burned copy of the Unirom 8.0K installer disc (from https://github.com/JonathanDotCel/unirom8_bootdisc_and_firmware_for_ps1/releases/), and it booted without problems.

- How do you use the GameShark cartridge for backups? I have the lid button taped down, and original game in, but the disc never stops spinning to allow swapping in the backup. Neither at the main menu or any of these available options causes it to stop spinning. It’s version 1.99 GS cart on 5501 PS1.

Is there a way to potentially recover these saves?
- Unirom also has a memory card manager that let's you see and undelete saves. You need either a CD-R with Unirom burned to it (on a modchipped PS or with a swap trick), or a memory card with FreePSXBoot using Unirom (on any non-chipped PS).

Combo memory card! FreePSXBoot on card #1, and a plain 15-block memory card on #2. Now I don't have to constantly insert/remove cards when booting up copies.
You don't need to remove your card from slot 1 anymore since FreePSXBoot and the TonyHax version of FreePSXBoot have images for leaving the card in Slot 2.

Just a note: since v1.3, tonyhax does proactively circumvent protections with anti-modchip protections by using a system BIOS patch.

Yep, and almost every major console since the 360 has had some sort of Hypervisor for this very reason. They're stuck in a sandbox where even if the game has hackable code you can't get system access. Compare this to something like the recent Tonyhax PS1 exploit that leads to you being able to get full system access because of how game code is "trusted".
