While not JSON specifically, twine index.html files can be parsed into (or natively written in) Twee with tools like Tweego, which is a fairly easy-to-parse file format. Certainly an option if you have existing Twine stories you'd like to transfer.

Prior to that, v1.4.2 was that last release that included code updates, and based on dates in that list it was released sometime shortly after 2-jun-2014.

FWIW Twine’s FLOSS https://github.com/tweecode/twine , so in theory you could have been the help improving the subjectively ugly UI.
