I like to use TOML files. I find the syntax to be more palatable than YAML, and you can load them quite easily with tomlkit. I believe there's a PEP to add a parser to the standard library too, since they're used for pyproject.toml now.

Comparison of Python TOML parser libraries
The pypyr automation pipeline task-runner open-source project recently added TOML parsing & writing functionality as a core feature. To this end, I researched the available free & open-source Python TOML parser libraries to figure out which option to use.
What are some alternatives?
tomli - A lil' TOML parser
Ansible - Ansible is a radically simple IT automation platform that makes your applications and systems easier to deploy and maintain. Automate everything from code deployment to network configuration to cloud management, in a language that approaches plain English, using SSH, with no agents to install on remote systems. https://docs.ansible.com.
pytoml - A TOML-0.4.0 parser/writer for Python.
psutil - Cross-platform lib for process and system monitoring in Python
rtoml - A fast TOML library for python implemented in rust.
Fabric - Simple, Pythonic remote execution and deployment.
toml - Tom's Obvious, Minimal Language
letsencrypt - Certbot is EFF's tool to obtain certs from Let's Encrypt and (optionally) auto-enable HTTPS on your server. It can also act as a client for any other CA that uses the ACME protocol.
mypy - Optional static typing for Python
SaltStack - Software to automate the management and configuration of any infrastructure or application at scale. Get access to the Salt software package repository here:
qtoml - Another Python TOML encoder/decoder
honcho - Honcho: a python clone of Foreman. For managing Procfile-based applications.
