I am working on something similar. I encourage you to take a look at https://github.com/axs5489/tkterm You want the tkterm.py and tksetup.py files. Its far from complete, but I figure I'd save you some time. Serial uses a menu system to pop-up various settings windows, returning them to the main window. I wanted the ability to pop up multiple instances of Serial and have them not interfere with each other (closing the first one used to close all). I fixed that by instantiating a master windowing class (minimized via the withdraw command), automatically instantiating a Serial object and having the ability to add/remove them. My current problem is getting the master window to close when its run out of child windows.
