What's the common reason why tkinter is slow?
For instance, tksheet. Adapting your current code to work with it will probably take a bit of work, but the payoff will be more than worth it. I've written a short example demonstrating the basic workings (using your code as a baseline), but you will most likely need the documentation too.

How do I save and restore the X session with display manager (xdm)?
When I search for 'restore x session xdm' or the like I do not find any related results. I found a great project for python on github xsession-manager but unfortunately it relies on wmctrl which does not work with ratpoison so sticking with the display manager/xdm route but gotta find what exactly I have to set to make it work.
