I second this although this https://github.com/mido/mido/ seems to be more up to date. The one you linked is abandoned and doesn't work with Python 3.

finally learned how to map midi data to character arms with python (woaiiw - carried)
I ended up using https://github.com/mido/mido to read midi from a file in python.
