Preview LaTeX equations on *.tex files
If you do not necessarily want overlays: You may want to check out my package magic-logic-buffer which makes LaTeX math commands look and behave like the characters they would print. It also allows conversion from LaTeX to unicode and the other way around.

org-mode for academic writing (vs. RMarkdown, etc.)
I do not know enough about emacs to do all this on my own. Therefore, I have been working with a programmer who helped me out. I told him exactly what I needed, he sent code, I tested, he revised - until everything worked as intended. It takes much time, but the results are great. This way, we also published two packages: org-ref-prettify, which shows org-ref syntax as APA citations (available on MELPA) and magic-logic-buffer, which overlays logic formulas and color commands in LaTeX and does Unicode to LaTeX conversion and vice versa (not on MELPA since based on another package). This is what my next post will be about.

Writing inline LaTeX in an *.org file (I, like /u/doolio_, recommend Karthinks blog post about this along with the fragtog package.)

How do you combine org with LaTeX?
It can be arbitrary LaTeX. As the link states "Environments of any kind". You can also type C-c C-x C-l to render the LaTeX fragments as inline images (for example, see demo gif in https://github.com/io12/org-fragtog).

Is it possible to hide "\begin{equation}" as org-hide-emphasis-markers does for bold or italics?
This feature is provided by org-appear . For latex fragments, the package providing the same feature is org-fragtog

Preview LaTeX equations on *.tex files
I mean, what I'm looking for is something like this but while I am editing an *.tex file. I have tried the texfrag package, but it doesn't seem to work or I'm too stupid to set it up. Can someone explain to me how can this be achieved?
