How can you have a progress bar in the wibar that you can drag to increase or decrease a value?
Here is a file where I am doing exactly that, in fact there are a couple examples of sliders in that subdirectory you can check out. I am adjusting brightness, volume and blur level with the exact functionality you are suggesting if I am understanding you and I comment the code relatively well as to give you some sense of what's going on in the file itself.

Another great example comes from one of awesome's developers, actionless who also developed oomox, the GTK theme customization software written in python you probably heard of. For more experimental configurations, there is another awesome dev, Avatar Emmanuel Lepage Vallée, who has a number of repos spun out of pull requests that offer glimpses into other directions one can take with Lua. Really the sky is the limit and that's definitely not the case with sway that makes you apologize for using Nvidia just to get it to run...
