On the awesome side, we are testing luajit with the following matrix of libraries/includes https://github.com/awesomeWM/awesome/blob/master/.github/workflows/main.yml#L53-L58. According to our latest CI runs, it's all green on master https://github.com/awesomeWM/awesome/actions. If there is something wrong in our tests, please open an issue on github, so we can resolve it.
The thing about awesomewm that is so interesting, for those of us that are neurotic enough to truly even want this (like me) is that with awesome and nothing else if you dare, you can code out the rest of what would make up your ideal DE on the GUI side of things. With enough time, even rofi can be replaced by home-rolled lua modules. Sure its a lot of work and a lot more looking through other repos but you can do it and all you will really need to add in are the terminal programs to hook into the output of and a GTK theme. Until I finish my work on this topic, Tom Meyer's TDE part of his TOS is an excellent example of exactly that, he really has made an entire DE with just lua code and some terminal applications. Its excellent work, opinionated in the extreme but that's kind of the point after all.
Another great example comes from one of awesome's developers, actionless who also developed oomox, the GTK theme customization software written in python you probably heard of. For more experimental configurations, there is another awesome dev, Avatar Emmanuel Lepage Vallée, who has a number of repos spun out of pull requests that offer glimpses into other directions one can take with Lua. Really the sky is the limit and that's definitely not the case with sway that makes you apologize for using Nvidia just to get it to run...
