Firefox Sync Server VS go-sync

Firefox's sync service is open source [1], so you can self-host it and update your about:config to point to it. I do this and it works great.

Caveat is that I've linked to the old Python one, and they've got a new Rust one, but it didn't support SQLite the last time I had checked.

I'm currently self-hosting Firefox's sync server, its been working good for a year now. Syncing everything, bookmarks, history between Windows, Mac and Android. I like Firefox but I want to switch browsers after reading this (Not necessarily this issue, but the possibilty of something similar that can't be avoided happening in the future).

Been self-hosting their unmaintained repo https://github.com/mozilla-services/syncserver for 2 years with 0 maintenance required (honestly forgot I had it running until I saw this thread).

Their issue tracker suggests that it’s mostly due to their team being focused on the main Firefox service:

I’m sure it wouldn’t be that hard to port but if they’re committed to a different direction it’s probably best not to give the impression that you should plan to keep using it.

Actually, the v1 protocol was deprecated and replaced by a fork of chromium sync (https://github.com/brave/go-sync).

I think what you're describing are the "Tip" buttons which can be added on a few supported sites (which can be disabled). They aren't selling anything- it's a browser feature which people can use if they like.

The server implementation for sync is mostly compatible with Chromium and can be used without Brave. Someone could clone https://github.com/brave/go-sync and stand up their own server. It would require some patches on top of Chromium (similar to what is done in Brave) to implement the authentication - but once that is done, all of the Chromium tools like chrome://sync-internals work just fine

Do you mean like a file based backup solution? From researching similar things like CardDAV and why it's used, file based syncing tends to not be reliable enough. I'll update this post but as of not too long ago. Brave made exactly what I was looking for. A syncing tool that is linked to your devices. https://github.com/brave/go-sync I'll update the original post now.
