shotcut VS PhotoGIMP

I had the same bad experience than you with Pitivi, Openshot and KDEnlive. Then I discovered shotcut and I was finally able to work. And it's FLOSS.

Some free options include Kdenlive and Shotcut. I would have previously recommended Wondershare Filmora, but they recently did some pretty shady things with their licensing and I'd avoid them now despite the software actually being quite good.

The biggest name is Kdenlive. I've also used Shotcut before, but I edit smth like once a year, so I'm not an expert

Take a look at: Shotcut for video. Paint.NET for image editing. LMMS for your soundtrack. All free.

For simple editing even shotcut might be enough for you. It's also in the repos.

Shotcut suits your needs perfectly.

I used to use PhotoShop heavily and still have a lot of the UI muscle-memorized. I switched to GIMP + https://github.com/Diolinux/PhotoGIMP and found it mostly fits my needs for basic image editing.

There's also photoGimp:

But it's interesting if we can get FOSS Gui toolkits that allow for different approaches to menu/toolbar/discovery where the user can easily adjust and select how things should work - like readline Emacs/vi selection on steroids for Gui.

I doubt it, code needs to be maintained , even if you will get stuck on old libraries you could miss out on features and improvement, of course if the changes are small and it's more like a patchset (something like photogimp) , that might be more feasible.

I don't like gimp at all, but you can still try PhotoGimp.
