Rust vs C++ for ASCII games in general
If you’re interested, here’s my code. I started from this super-simple example by Richard Anaya. My API for input and drawing is very basic; like three methods in and three out to JavaScript.

Not as far as I had hoped, but I have managed to port a previous year's entry from C++ to Rust(WebAssembly) and Javascript, so it is playable in a browser. Source code is on Github.
What are some alternatives?
hecs - A handy ECS

Doryen - Doryen based in Libtcod 1.5.1 - Refactoring struct and clear code, deleted the old C code and added new features and algorithms. The objective is a small 2D rendering engine (based in grid or tiles). It is written in an effort to create an engine being as lightweight and conceptually clean as possible.
wglt - WebGL Terminal
Cataclysm - A post-apocalyptic roguelike. New features relative to C:Whales are scheduled for after 0.2.0, the savefile breaking release.
