FWIW here is a 1-liner I used for H in *.highlights; do cat $(echo $H | sed "s/highlights/metadata/" ) | grep visibleName; cat $H/*json | grep 't":' | grep -v '"height"'; done to get native highlights to my wiki https://fabien.benetou.fr/PIMVRdata/RecentHighlights and there are other tools e.g https://github.com/sabidib/remarking to capture more and integration better, including to tools like Mendeley or ReadWise https://github.com/zachwick/rextract

We use the SuptleCrypto Web API implementation and a library called scrypt (this one: https://github.com/ricmoo/scrypt-js).
We also had someone from the EteSync/EteBase project take a look at the code before Obsidian Sync was released.
