Is it possible to translate a library in an app?
2 projects | reddit.com/r/reactnative | 17 Feb 2021
Translation isn't really a react native specific issue, the web/react also needs to be able to support this. You shouldn't need anything fancy to translate, but strings would need to be localized via https://github.com/zoontek/react-native-localize or https://github.com/globalizejs/globalize. With regards to translating the library, you can either use https://github.com/ds300/patch-package to localize all the strings for your own use or submit a PR to the library. I am also assuming that you have no flexibility on what text is being displayed when using the libraries' API (ex: headerTitle in react-navigation) because in that case it is related to translating your own app.

patch-package is a tool for this specific purpose
You commit your changes as a git diff and add the patch-package command to your post-install hook so it runs after every install
My main use for it is fixing other packages' package.json exports field and Typescript definitions

That can be easily achieved by modifying the codebase as long as you do not add brand-new paragraphs and only update the existing components. And instead of forking it into a private repository, you can leverage patch-package (please read the READ.ME file from patch-package that explains the benefits of patching over forking and when to fork instead)

Yarn 2+ and pnpm support patching dependencies with your custom code. For npm and Yarn 1, you can use a library, but remember to somehow ignore it when using other PMs.

Sometimes a lib is not well maintained and you want to patch using https://www.npmjs.com/package/patch-package
NX for React

The next struggle is not a big issue anymore, but it was previously. I'm talking about low-level access to the webpack config. I think Angular started this trend, and NX developers followed it for some reason. Maybe it's their Angular roots. I don't know. It was a pain in the ass to get to the config. We had to use patch-package util to overwrite config directly inside the node_modules folder to make the change we needed. Luckily it's not the case anymore. You can provide a custom webpack config per application without needing a 3rd party package.
