Monitoring temperature in a livestock shed
Sounds like a fun and interesting project! The most obvious thing to me is a hub and spoke configuration with the individual sensors tied to a central hub which gathers all the temp data. The sensors would be mqtt-attached (similar to this). The hub would have a backend attachment to a solid IoT infrastructure like Amazon Web Services (AWS) IoT Core service (here are a couple examples of my own here and here). Once you have gathered the data onto AWS, you can also post-process the data to do trending and analysis (as well as temperature alerts, of course).

Send An SMS Msg When Garage Door Opens
I made a simple garage door left open notifier awhile back because I got sick of leaving my garage door open. It uses a tilt switch + nodemcu stuck on the door itself to detect the door orientation, open or closed. On state change it makes a get request to a nodejs server and if the door stays open for more than 5 minutes it sends me an email. All open source, runs on my network, only part that goes out is the email. garage door left open notifier

Finished my Garage Door State Indicator project, Shows whether the garage door is open or closed on a little OLED.
No mention is made of editing any configuration, even in the setup instructions.

Got my oled hooked up to my raspberry pi. First pic is my first attempt at a garage door, second and third are second attempt. Making a garage door state indicator.
Good point. I'm trying to learn more about electronics and awhile ago I made a garage door left open notifier with a nodemcu and a tilt switch. It emails me when I leave the garage door open for more than 5 minutes, and this is just a next step on that project.
