Any good music programs like garage band or fruity loops?
Free and opensource DAWs: Ardour is the "standard" traditional DAW, but I recommend checking out Zrythm or Qtractor as you might prefer their workflows.

I got $76, what DAW should I get?
With that money you could get: - Reaper ($60) - Renoise ($75) - Radium (Pay what you want) - Ardour (Pay what you want) - LMMS (Free) - Waveform (Free) - Qtractor (Free) (Linux only) (There are probably others, but I don't know everything lol)
- What DAW do you use?

You can use a LV2 plugin like sfizz or liquidsfz to load SFZ instruments into your DAW/plugin host.

Linux noob wanting to record MIDI bass and drums
Bass: To get started with bass guitar I'd recommend using a general synthesizer that can load soundfonts and/or sfz sample sets and then finding a bass sound that you're happy with. There are a number out there. Fluidsynth is great for soundfonts, and the Calf plugin set has a GUI plugin wrapper that is pretty easy to work with (but beware that Calf plugins in general have a spotty reputation re: DSP and sound quality). For sfz format, there is liquidsfz and sfizz, among others. I've tried both of them, and found liquidsfz to perform better, had some glitches with sfizz, but I know other people use sfizz and are happy with it.
What are some alternatives?
When comparing qtractor and liquidsfz you can also consider the following projects:
lmms - Cross-platform music production software
sfizz - SFZ parser and synth c++ library, providing a JACK standalone client
zrythm - a highly automated and intuitive digital audio workstation - official mirror
fluidsynth - Software synthesizer based on the SoundFont 2 specifications
ardour - Mirror of Ardour Source Code
