USB Midi device with linux
Side note just in case: As a fader control, most softwares will expect a CC (control change) instruction, not a Velocity from a Note, with a Midi Channel from 1 to 16, a Control number from 1 to 128 and a Value (the changing part as you move the fader) between 0 and 127. If your hardware isn't configured like this, you can use qmidiroute to translate the signal from your device into something useable by the software.

Mapping a single midi note/CC to multiple Midi notes (in Jack)?
I use qmidiroute on Archlinux to translate midi output from my interfaces to specific midi input for lighting software (like changing a CC to a note, or tweaking velocity values).

JACK and Java
I've personally had good success running my prototyping app on top of jnajack - works great for getting both audio and midi in and out to/from a jack server.
