Custom Event Tutorial, does one exist that goes beyond the basics?
I will say - if you are stuggling with GUI stuff, feel free to check out Pygame GUI - whether you end up using it or not it will probably give you some ideas - and it makes use of custom events for handling button events and the like.

If you have not heard of Pygame GUI before, it is an open source, graphical user interface library that helps you add things like buttons, text, drop down menus, status bars, tool tips, windows and the like to your Pygame games and applications. The project GitHub/source code page is here, the documentation page is here and the example projects page is here.

How to embed a pygame window/screen inside a tk or Wx window ?
Do everything in pygame unless you absolutely need another module for drawing. You can use https://github.com/MyreMylar/pygame_gui if you don't feel like coding buttons.

Pygame GUI - 0.6.0 - Released
I use two (three technically) custom fonts as the defaults for Pygame GUI. You can see them here in the GitHub page . I don't think I'm doing that much else beyond basic pygame for the actual drawing of the letters (there is some somewhat complicated use of pre-multiplied alpha blending for improved transparent surface compositing), but I remember spending a lot of time fiddling with the text rendering a year or so ago so perhaps it just worked out well :)

My Implementation Of A Window System (Pygame)
Looking great! Do you know about Pygame GUI? Obviously sometimes re-inventing the wheel is part of the learning process, but it is there if you need it.
