Is there any way to receive XMPP text messages in a script and capture the text of each message in a variable? Do not need sending capability.
It may or may not be easier to do it by writing a plugin for Profanity. It basically provides a python module with a bunch of functions. In fact, this might get it done: https://github.com/Neo-Oli/profanity-notifycmd
- Profanity client with notification support (herbe) on OpenBSD possible?

This should be easy enough with any simple scripting language; I prefer aioxmpp, but depending on your level of comfort with Python this may or may not be an option. They have some examples of using it and the echobot one might be close (you'd need to remove the sending part and possibly remove or replace all the flag/option parsing stuff, which is a bit confusing in an example).
What are some alternatives?
