I do post many pictures, but I am tempted to self-host Pixelfed as well as an Instagram alternative.

Is something like Pixelfed an option?

I'm not affiliated with the project, neither I consider it a panacea, but anyone who might be interested, here it is: https://pixelfed.org/ It's best to use the web browser with it, although there's an Android app for it (PixelDroid), and there is an official app for iOS and Android currently in beta.

Contrary to initial expectations, Threads falls short in terms of embracing decentralization. Notably, the platform does not support the widely adopted ActivityPub protocol, which is essential for interoperability with other decentralized networks in the Fediverse. This absence prevents seamless interaction between Threads and existing platforms that adhere to decentralized principles, such as Mastodon and Pixelfed.

Fediverse, or 'federated universe' is the name given to the social media platforms that utilize this concept of federation and decentralization. While Lemmy and Mastodon are the most popular right now, there are many similar platforms. There is Peertube for example, which is a Youtube alternative, or Pixelfed, which is an instagram alternative. You can view a list of all such platforms on this site. If you want something easy to deploy, zero maintenance (almost) and with a tiny footprint I can't recommend PiGallery [1] enough. Also good mobile support.

I tried some of the fancy alternatives here suggested, but they insist in doing it their way. PiGallery just displays your folder structure as Albums, simple as that, whereas others like Photoprism keep ruminating in the background doing their AI, which I personally don't need.

Pair that with a good backup strategy with e.g. restic and you're ready to fly.

Also check out PiGallery for a more light weight solution https://github.com/bpatrik/pigallery2 (with less features of course, but it may work if you only want an online gallery)

If you're familiar with Docker, PiGallery2 would work perfectly for this.

I'd also consider Pigallery2. It's maybe not as powerful as Photoprism, but it is very fast, lighweight and integrates quite well with the exiting image metadata (keywords and faces). It's a web interface, but it works quite well on mobile and the search option is powerful.
