When Knowing Someone at Meta Is the Only Way to Break Out of "Content Jail"
Try Pixelfed or even Bluesky. Pixelfed is the fediverse alternative to Instagram, and there are some independent app devs working on Bluesky apps to be similar in look to it.
You won't find the reach, but you'll find a little community of other artists that can be a lot more personal & fulfilling than you would find on mainstream social media.

Show HN: I built an app to block Shorts and Reels
You could also save yourself a lot of effort (and avoid being the constant subject of manipulation and exploitation) and not use centralized, capitalistic platforms like Instagram. Try Pixelfed ( https://pixelfed.org/ ) or something.

Ask HN: How would you launch a privacy-first, Instagram-like social network?
It seems like you are going through the same thought process that I went through and led me to work on https://communick.com. Save yourself a world of pain and find something else to work on.
The amount of people who really value their privacy and are willing to pay to avoid getting their data exploited is too low to matter in the context of a social network. I've tried different pricing, I've tried different extra features, I've tried going upmarket, but I never got a critical mass of people to make the whole sustainable.
On the content creator side, it's even worse. Creators will always prefer to work on platforms that offer them the widest reach. So even when you have privacy enthusiasts or creators who know all the issues from YouTube/Reddit/Instagram, they will still keep a channel there out of fear of not keeping up with "the algorithm".
If you really insist on going mad like me and believe that this is a worthy cause to work on, look at the existing social networks that are based on open source and open standards, like PixelFed [0] and Vernissage [1].

The Fediverse is getting its own TikTok competitor called Loops
It's a bit premature, but if it's made by the same guy who made https://pixelfed.org then he definitely has experience in this area.

Radicle 1.0 – A Local-First, P2P Alternative to GitHub
Surprised no one mentioned ForgeFed [0]:
> ForgeFed is a federation protocol for software forges and code collaboration tools for the software development lifecycle and ecosystem. This includes repository hosting websites, issue trackers, code review applications, and more. ForgeFed provides a common substrate for people to create interoperable code collaboration websites and applications.
It's based on ActivityPub [1], the same protocol that powers Mastodon [2], Lemmy [3], and Pixelfed [4].
