Wanna test OPNsense 22.1 based on FreeBSD 13? (only for testing)
It's a niche use case involving tagging packets on sr-iov VFs. See https://github.com/pfsense/FreeBSD-src/commit/15873ac96fcc4e81a25d35e735a1fbae9d727360
- What is the difference here between "parent-interface" and "vlan-parent"?

Help me find a switch that will strip 802.1q tags
I resolved the issue with OPNSense by recompiling OPNSense's dhclient with a patch submitted a while ago to pfsense: https://github.com/pfsense/FreeBSD-src/commit/15051bfd014b2c1e6972a55f58e25cd6907cac8e

FreeBSD source - the source code, with patches of the FreeBSD base.

Netgate appears to have removed Scott's latest blog post regarding WireGuard
But how are they supposed to know that people are running some modified FreeBSD version with pre-release patches? That is my point. It's not like pfSense is going out of their way to document what kind of changes they're including in their FreeBSD fork.

pfSense is closed source?
But the community edition is fully open source? As available on github: https://github.com/pfsense/pfsense https://github.com/pfsense/FreeBSD-src By core do you mean like the main kernel. I don't agree that a company should take someone else is work modify it and then pass it off as there own. to me that is just morally wrong. so in which this falls under false advertisement. Tbh I can see this as a good reason why people are moving away. looks like I have some labbing to do.

pfSense Plus 21.02.2 and pfSense CE 2.5.1 Now Available
So the first point.. it seem like there is movement on that. The ZFS guided install has been closed off which is mentioned here https://github.com/opnsense/installer/issues/1 This is also mentioned here https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=18187.0 So it seems I can get ZFS on for my stand-alone hardware boxes now. This is important as sometimes the power gets tripped at remote sites, and ZFS handles this WAY WAY BETTER than UFS that sometimes gets corrupted badly with power outages.
What are some alternatives?
pfSense - Main repository for pfSense
pfsense-is-closed-source - The only purpose of this repository is to document the false advertising of the so-called "open-source" pfSense®™ project. Brought to you courtesy of Netgate/Rubicon Communications LLC/ Electric Sheep Fencing LLC.
FreeBSD-ports - FreeBSD ports tree with pfSense changes
pfsense-still-closedsource - The only purpose of this repository is to document the false advertising of the so-called "open-source" pfSense®™ project. Brought to you courtesy of Netgate/Rubicon Communications LLC/ Electric Sheep Fencing LLC.
pfatt - Enable true bridge mode for AT&T U-Verse and pfSense (this is a fork of an original repository https://github.com/aus/pfatt. Since it is not available anymore, I'll do my best to maintain a copy for people that still need a bypass)
