I have tried to get this behaviour for a while. The closest I have gotten is using perspective.el, but it ended up being a bit clunky when I tried it like 4 years ago and now I just used bookmark+ which can save/load desktop files as bookmarks.

To scratch a personal itch, I created a little package that integrates perspective-el into the built-in tab-bar.
  • Multi project management - perspective, persp-mode, tab-bar-mode, or...?
    9 projects | /r/emacs | 4 Feb 2023
But I'm rethinking about my approach, as tab-bar-mode would give me nice visual help (#3), and it seems difficult to recover a perspective using perspective, and persp-mode may be a better fit in that sense (#4). The Treemacs integration isn't working for me either, and I get the same list of file trees for all perspectives -- I'm pretty sure I'm doing something stupid, but this was handled nicely with Doom Emacs's workspace support (#5). But perspective seems to work best for segregated buffer list (#1).
  • Grouping org headings
    1 project | /r/orgmode | 3 Feb 2023
I think perspective.el is about what I’m looking for. If you had a list of org-ids, theses could be brought up in indirect buffers, and then those buffers added to the perspective group.
  • [Perspective.el package] Issues with persp-mode-prefix-key
    2 projects | /r/emacs | 16 Jan 2023
As for why this broke: this change went into Perspective a few weeks after Emacs 28 shipped. You either updated your packages recently after not updating for a while, or you switched to Emacs 28 (or later). It sounds a bit like you want „perspective.el“ (1). It allows you to define „virtual workspaces“ of buffers with individual window layouts. On each virtual desktop the standard buffer list is replaced with a shorter showing only buffers belonging to the current context. I use it every day to keep „code“ buffers separate from my „test“ buffers.

  • Flakes aren't real and cannot hurt you: using Nix flakes the non-flake way
    6 projects | news.ycombinator.com | 9 Jan 2024
The project uses this overlay: https://github.com/nix-community/emacs-overlay

What that means is if something is broken in Emacs, the community will fix it, and all I need to do is run `nix flake update` to grab the latest commit and then `nix run .#build-switch` to alter my system. Easy.

Thanks for the heads-up on the 404s! I've fixed those links.

In re: to org-agenda, I don't use that as much anymore. But I heavily, heavily using org-roam w/ org-roam-dailies everyday to build my own networked graph of notes. For tasks, nowadays I just use simple docs for projects and Asana to keep a catalog of everything.

Nix offers the same advantage through the use of emacs-overlay. Besides, Nixpkgs contains more Linux packages than any other distros. Depending on the user's needs, Nix is another option.

Its great to see both eglot and tree-sitter being merged. However, I am unhappy about the state of 'emacs configurations/distributions' right now. I have been using Doom Emacs, but the development is pretty much stalled there [0], and I don't think there is any distribution that is keeping up with these cutting-edge features (compared to the NeoVim ecosystem, let's say). Somehow it feels like I was seeing a lot more activity about Emacs configurations two-three years ago.

    > Compile EmacsLisp files ahead of time

Ooh, this is interesting. Hoping to see a derivation in https://github.com/nix-community/emacs-overlay soon.

[0] I am not complaining though as Doom was the main author's personal config from the get-go. I am just pointing out a void.
