Is Numi or Soulver 3 better?
I ended switching to Parsify after trying Numi and Soulver, and I've been happy. I think it's a good app that deserves more attention.

There is also Drawing, but I think it has no options to set compression parameters for e.g. jpeg.

Krita is a professional FREE and open source painting program
Drawing fits that description, but it isn't really comparable to Krita — the authors describe it as like MS Paint but for Gnome.
Pinta seems similar, but more Xfce-ish.
