introducing packwiz2nix: one of the best tools for creating minecraft modpacks, now compatible with nix!
hi all! recently i've started work on hosting a minecraft server, configured mostly declaratively with nixos and nix-minecraft. one small problem i found was that there wasn't really a way to easily use packwiz (a great tool i use to keep modpacks up to date automatically, distribute to friends across multiple launchers, and deploy to servers) modpacks i already had - so, i figured why not integrate it with nix!

Packwiz Virus
I installed an application called packwiz https://github.com/packwiz/packwiz and it tried the access the oculus vr setup which seems like a folder no good program would try to access.

Building Minecraft modpacks on linux?
Perhaps try using the CLI tool packwiz. It's the one I personally use to maintain my packs

Ferium 3.20.1! Ferium is a CLI Minecraft mod manager for Modrinth, CurseForge, and GitHub Releases, and it has been updated a lot since the first announcement, update your local copies now!
For modpacks, I'd recommend looking into Packwiz support. https://github.com/packwiz/packwiz

Launcher to use nowadays ?
If you're creating a pack then browse for mods on the actual CurseForge (or Modrinth) sites and use Packwiz to manage the installation/updates of those mods.

Is there a way to set up a modded server (forge) that doesn't require me to lead all my not so technologically inclined friends through the maze of installing mods.
If you are more technically inclined and have some server hosting space to spare, you might want to consider things like packwiz - this adds a MultiMC pre-launch hook that automatically updates modpacks - or SKCraft Launcher, a sort of "white-label launcher" that distributes whatever modpacks you like.

Is there any ways that I can share a custom modpack with a friend?

What is the current recommended documentation when starting out with NixOs?
All the resources mentioned in other comments are pretty good, but mostly they are unofficial. The official NixOS wiki is very outdated and unmaintained. You will have better luck reading other people’s configurations, nixpkgs source code and GitHub issues. For the nix language the official wiki is a nice reference https://nixos.org/manual/nix/stable/language/index.html. This configuration is a great starting point https://github.com/Misterio77/nix-config for learning by example. It covers most of what you may need, although bootstrapping your own config is quite rough. You may want to take a look at https://github.com/Misterio77/nix-starter-configs. It’s very basic and should be simple to understand and improve.

My First Impressions of Nix
Yes. E.g. some guy's config with 6 different machines[1]: multiple desktops, laptops, servers, a Raspberry Pi, and a VPS. That's a rather advanced use of Nix for configuration, but definitely shows what it's capable of.
