Is it possible to integrate bibliographic information into org files in a selfcontained way?
As far as I can see Nicolas Rougier's org-bib-mode doesn't do that, but uses a corresponding bib-file.

Do you like org-level-1, org-level-2, etc. all different colors, or everything the same color (like black on white, etc.), or something between?
You might also find inspiration from Nicolas Rougier's org mode setup: https://github.com/rougier/notebook-mode and https://github.com/rougier/org-bib-mode have screenshots which show very little color put on headlines.

WIP citation syntax for org-mode?
I've found out that there is a development branch of Org which supports its own citation syntax -> https://github.com/andras-simonyi/citeproc-org#org-mode-citations-and-bibliography-using-the-wip-cite-syntax

Custom bibliography style using .cls and org-ref

Is it possible to add a citation style org org-mode?
Want to recommend citeproc-org. It's basically doing citations for non-latex languages, for example markdown and HTML exports. It can use the new CSL style format, works with org-ref references and it's trivial to use. Highly recommend 👍.
What are some alternatives?
citar - Emacs package to quickly find and act on bibliographic references, and edit org, markdown, and latex academic documents.
org-ref - org-mode modules for citations, cross-references, bibliographies in org-mode and useful bibtex tools to go with it.
citeproc-el - A CSL 1.0.2 Citation Processor for Emacs.
org-capture-ref - Extract metadata/bibtex info from websites for org-capture
elfeed-org - Configure the Elfeed RSS reader with an Orgmode file
notebook-mode - GNU Emacs notebook mode
org-mode - This is a MIRROR only, do not send PR.
persid - Persistent identifier library for GNU Emacs
org-clock-csv - Export Emacs org-mode clock entries to CSV format.
styles - Official repository for Citation Style Language (CSL) citation styles.
