FOSS/Open source Metroidvania
Someone posted a FOSS MV engine recently: https://github.com/veridisquot/openmv
- A small game engine I've been working on for a few months. It is written from scratch and only depends on operating system libraries. I'm going to use it to make a metroidvania game.

I absolutely ADORE AM2R. This game is fantastic
Drag and drop simply doesn't scale to a game of AM2R's caliber. If you'd like to see more of this "no programming no engine game..." https://gitlab.com/yellowafterlife/AM2Rrc

Are there any AM2R-based fangames in development?
I believe you are seeking free use versus open source. The Community Updates are not free use for a few reasons, primarily because AM2R's code isn't really fit for other applications and that the original source release was licensed under similar language (see AM2Rrc).
What are some alternatives?
When comparing openmv and AM2Rrc you can also consider the following projects:
ecs-faq - Frequently asked questions about Entity Component Systems
hydracastlelabyrinth - A port to Linux (and OpenPandora / DragonBox Pyra / ODroid / PocketCHIP / GameShell / AmigaOS4 / MorphOS / Emscripten) of Hydra Castle Labyrinth (a "metroidvania" kind of game). Status: Working.
entt - Gaming meets modern C++ - a fast and reliable entity component system (ECS) and much more
PracticeMetroidvania
flecs - A fast entity component system (ECS) for C & C++
Superstar-Game-Suite - A top-down 2D game creation suite for platforming, world building, and story telling.
