It is important that ebooks be sold without DRM
legal reasons? Seriously, has the DRM mafia cowed people so much? What the hell is wrong with sharing public software tools with others?
Here's one option you might try (no connection to it but it seems to be one of the most recently usable, trustworthy versions) https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools
- Kobo Plus para Kindle

Pocketbook VS Boox for multi-format books
I think either one would be fine. I know pocketbook prices are better especially in the used department. If you do go with the era I suggest keeping your kindle and use calibre. I'm not sure if you can just move the books straight to your pc or not so with calibre you should be able to access your ku books, remove the drm with this plugin, and then put those books your the pocketbook era.

Good Places to Buy Ebooks for Kindle other than Amazon?
In general, Kobo is probably the best option. Google Play Books would likely also work well. B&N also works, but the process of removing their DRM is more of a pain these days, since they got rid of their old non-Windows Store PC application. With any of them, you can use the software here to remove their DRM (in most cases, using it as a plugin via calibre). And once, you've removed the DRM, you can use calibre to convert the books from epub to mobi or azw3 or whatever you need to get stuff on your Kindle, since Kindle doesn't support epub like everyone else.

Hate Kobo's desktop app ... and I have tried to download my books so as to read them in another app and I can't seem to locate them. What e-readers do you use with Kobo books, and how do you get your kobo books into those apps? Thanks for any help .... somewhat frustrated ....
i download my kobo books through the pc software, then remove their drm with calibre and the dedrm plugin ( https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools/releases ). it auto detects your downloaded books, removes the drm and adds them to your calibre library

> I see it's available on Amazon but... well, I don't want Kindle format...
It's trivial to de-drm Kindle books and convert them to EPUB without drm. Can't help the distaste for Bezos, but you can have Kindle books in whatever other format you prefer.
You need Calibre (free/open source, gui [1]), its DeDrm plugin (free/open source, gui [2]), and its KindleUnpack plugin (free/open source, gui [3]). There's a guide [4].
It'll be less hassle over time if you install the Kindle app on your not-phone, not-tablet and just never update it. Amazon doesn't force upgrades and newer DRM schemes won't be pushed to you if your version doesn't support them.
