Lost in the weeds trying to make a campaign for friends
With Alpha Strike, your best bet is probably to use the Chaos campaign framework. Yes, the full Campaign Ops rules are more detailed, but if you're not playing classic, you won't know which actuator was damaged or how many LRMs are left to compute all those costs. If you were to use those rules, MekHQ is handy to help you track everything. It has a steep learning curve, but is great once you get used to it (I play against the bot all the time).

People who play LANCER on FoundryVTT (or other VTTs), what do you do/use it terms of battle maps?
I generally use the megamek mapmaker or maps from this drive. The megamek maps have to be stretched a bit in height to make the hexes fit foundry's hexes.

Newbie help
3. TROs are primarily lore books, there is generally enough info in them to build the units in them with the construction rules. I'd suggest using megameklab to look for interesting units and print record sheets.

Is it safe to mod Minecraft?
Minecraft modding has grown to a point that most of these are avoided, with many passionate adults who have the knowledge to make good mods, tools and hosting sites, opposed to children and only adults interested in profiting off those children. Like anything, Minecraft modding can still be unsafe, most recently seen in the fractureiser virus that spread into some popular mods that had a lot of trust from the community. But even that had quick action from the community with ways to stop and prevent it.

There's been a virus called 'fractureiser' that has been found in mods that can be found in this github page HERE. The page has more info, but this is very important. These websites are Curseforge, Devbucket, and less-so Modrinth. This virus targets Windows and Linux, so if you're on Mac you should be fine. Please check the github page for more info.
