My black 32GB NA unit has Toshiba NAND. Please check before assuming the worst / buying 8GB unit. App is called "mdinfo" and you can find it on the homebrew app store under "Tools".
I didn't find the app in the homebrew store, so if anyone else can't find it, you can download it from here. I link V1 instead the newer version because it gives less problems. Just copy the rpx file into the apps folder and open it as if it was a normal app. It took me longer than it should to be it running because every instruction I got was too complex for no reason.
- Apparently, every Wii U Basic Set (8Gb) would be perfectly safe from the NAND corruption problem, since those chips were only made by Samsung.

How can I tell what NAND I have without opening up the console
And just to clarify... To run mdinfo you need MochaPayload, which needs Environment Loader, which needs CustomRPXLoader, which needs PayloadFromRPX?

Homebrew community for the win!
I think it was the early models but the only way to be sure what you have is to run mdinfo on it or to take it apart and see what ship it has.

What’s is the whole NAND issue and why is it bad?
If you want to check your NAND models, there are two ways: open it up or use a homebrew called mdinfo.
-
Now this thing won't brick any time soon (or far)
The app I mentioned earlier can be found here (github). You DO need to have homebrew enabled on your console to use it though.
-
Is this something to be worried about? Haven’t used Wii U for months.

Can I fix bricked Wii U by emulating Rasberry Pi?
No, you can just put recovery software on the Pi/Switch and plug it into the Wii U during boot and it can open a recovery menu. https://github.com/GaryOderNichts/udpih. No soldering needed.
- Region Locked Wii U won’t open apps

How do I get Wii U system transfer working?
REMOVE CBHC FIRST! If you don't the 8GB Wii U will BRICK after the transfer. The only way to recover this brick is with udpih and recovery menu!
-
Can't boot up Wii U properly
Okay, so, from the description you're giving, there's definitely some sort of serious problem here. Most likely some kind of console side brick, unfortunately. If you have the correct hardware, you can try to diagnose it and maybe even repair it using udpih, but if not, you're probably out of luck.
-
What are your thoughts on the Raspberry Pi Pico?
That will only help if, for example, your coldboot title is set to one that isn't available (for example, if you remove the injected CBHC app). But anyway: https://github.com/GaryOderNichts/udpih
