8,1 iMac overheating on Linux Mint 21.2
Download mbpfan (zip or tar.gz version are the same, choose one) and extract it wherever you want. Despite the name, it works on any Intel Mac.

Linux on Mac
Also, you can change fan curves with mbpfancontrol

Linux on late 2013 MBP
I run my 2013 with the intel gpu kernel blacklisted and the nvidia 470 graphics drivers. The virtual TTYs and wayland don’t work but everything else works fine. For the fan/cpu stuff you can look at https://github.com/linux-on-mac/mbpfan

Ubuntu 20.04.4 on an old Macbook Pro
Check out mbpfan. Although, overheating on an 360p video sounds very wrong even without mbpfan, I've never had such problems. I suggest disassembling and checking out thermal paste.
- Installed on a late 2014 Mac mini

Using Linux Mint as Main OS on 2015 Macbook Pro
I am currently using Debian on my MacBook Air. The broadcom wifi card driver is not in the official repository so I had to use an external wifi dongle when first installing the OS. You might also encounter issues with the webcam, so this link might help. I am also using mbpfan to help with heating issues. Other than that, I haven't had any issues.

Suggested Raspberry PI
I would also suggest installing mbpfan whenever running non-macOS on Apple hardware.

Arch Linux on iMac 2019
As u/StoppedRedecorating mentioned, I had to get the firmware for the WiFi card from macOS. When I followed the guid it did not work for me, however. I then used a script to do it for me, which worked. I must have done something wrong when doing it manually. I can't remember which script it was. Probably this one: https://github.com/stefanpartheym/mbp15-wifi-driver I don't think that this information is very relevant for your iMac, though. I assume with 5k you mean the resolution. My MacBook operated at its native resolution which is not quite 4k. I was also able to operate an external screen at 5120 x 1440 @120, which, if my math is correct, is equal to 5k @60 in terms of bandwidth. I am not sure why the iMac would not work with 5k on Linux. According to my understanding, the GPU drivers should not be an issue. But I don't have any 1st hand experience.
