Opendistro, Opensearch??
The roadmap is public, the commits are public. People are contributing code. Right now OpenSearch plugins are 100% compatible with ElasticSearch plugins. Not sure how long that will last. We might see more sabotage being done from Elastic. https://github.com/logstash-plugins/logstash-output-elasticsearch/pull/1005

Why Logstash and Beats lock is bad
It is called Elasticsearch output for a reason and Beats / Logstash 7.13 expect the full feature-set of Elasticsearch 7.13 including new data types, APIs,... that are also tested in this combination; others will most likely fail somewhere at runtime. Forks with a different feature-set will need their own output and AWS has maintained an AWS ES Logstash output plugin (https://github.com/awslabs/logstash-output-amazon_es) for years for example.
