Arch and Gentoo - Best Surface Feature Support?
Gentoo - I never did install it on my SP, and I'm pretty sure I won't now. I love Gentoo, and spent many a night compiling away, but when I started to look through things like editing the make.conf, I realized how much I appreciate Arch's approach. If you're interested in trying Gentoo on your Surface, there is at least some support in Gentoo for it, including this howto, this YT video, and this Gentoo overlay, (but again it's 2 years old).

Failed to emerge sys-kernel/surface-sources-5.14.14
Also, the linux-surface overlay for Gentoo that I made is not officially affiliated with the linux-surface project. Thus its not officially supported by them. I may lurk around on the subreddit every once in a while but, you can report future issues on overlay's GitHub itself for better support.

Gentoo Linux - Part 2
If you already have Gentoo installed you can go ahead and add the overlay located here: https://github.com/Parinz/linux-surface-overlay.

I freed my Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 and Apple iMac
I would publish the guide in the overlay wiki itself as the the overlay wiki is meant to be a gateway for surface users to enter Gentoo in general, so you can check it out from there. Writing ebuilds are sure a challenge, I am by no means an expert on it. Help is always welcomed so, you can contribute lol. The tools are from here. Scroll down abit and you'll see some tools like iptsd (ported that already) for example.

Running the "Reflections on Trusting Trust" Compiler
I haven't installed it since ~2016/2017, so my knowledge might be outdated. If you use one of the arch-based distros with a GUI, then you're right that it's very easy to install.
If you follow the Wiki though, I think you still learn quite a bit: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/installation_guide

I downloaded arch and it said to reboot it ,so I did and it shows up. Does someone know what to do?(also The SSD in this laptop is brand new so idk if it's important)
This is right at the bottom of the installation guide (if you followed it and did not go the install script route). Regardless, it seems that arch is installed, now, either install a desktop environment (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, ... ) or a window manager ( i3, awesome, bspwm, herbstluftwm, ...) -> https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/General_recommendations#Graphical_user_interface.

Stop following outdated YouTube tutorials and just use the installation guide on the Arch Wiki. All of the information needed is there.

Can someone explain Arch Linux to me. I'm a newbie.
Just try to install arch once. It has excellent installation guide. But it all depends on what you want to achieve. If you are a complete newbie in linux I'd recommend going with something pre-configured first (I used manjaro before jumping too arch). But if you want to get better knowledge of system internals - try arch.
