  • Bye-bye Windows gaming? SteamOS officially expands past the Steam Deck

You don't need to wait for Valve to get this experience today. The HTPC build of Bazzite [1] brings an experience identical to SteamOS to all computers with an AMD or Intel GPU from the past 8 years or so.

It works amazingly well and I can't imagine going back to Windows for a PC that is built for video games. I use it on my "Gaming HTPC" (Ryzen 3600, Radeon RX6600) and it brings a great console experience to my TV, without being attached to a locked down console ecoystem and with access to my PC game library and without the enormous cruft and user hostility that Windows has you manage these days.

    [1]: https://bazzite.gg

[2]: Under the hood it's built on Fedora and Universal Blue, so under the hood it's different from SteamOS which is built on an immutable version of Arch Linux. However, that implementation detail is actually almost totally irrelevant if you want to play games since all software is managed by Steam and Flatpak on both systems.

SteamOS can already be run on desktops.

In fact, they have made a sleek step-by-step guide on how to do it:

If you don't like being dependent on a distro which more or less is in full control of Valve you could also try Bazzite, which includes a ton of nice to have extra features aswell:

You can pretty much get that experience today. Go build yourself a gaming PC and install Bazzite. It is a bit focused on handhelds but also works on more desktop form factor but controller focused PCs. Steam Big Picture works as well so it is a lot of the same interface as what you'd get on SteamOS.

There’s definitely been a sea change in efforts to provide a better UX when it comes to gaming. When steamos released, it seems to motivate scattered efforts to start congregating together in a more coherent way. See also:

Does this mean you can pass the gyro controls onto Steam Link or GeForce Now or some such? I have no interest in retro games, but it would be awesome to use gyro aiming for shooters...

I went looking for KDE, but was disappointed. From the FAQ on https://projectbluefin.io/:

    > What if I want something like KDE or another window manager?

    > Bluefin is an opinionated GNOME experience. However Universal Blue provides a maintained set of base images for anyone to be able to make a custom image. We hope Bluefin acts as an inspiration for others to build their own communities around user experiences. For example check out Bazzite if you want a great KDE gaming experience, similar to SteamOS.

The Bazzite link 404s, but there is info at https://universal-blue.org/blog/2023/11/08/bazzite-20/ and https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite. Seems mostly focused on SteamDeck.
