There’s actually a special Raspberry Pi on the ISS called AstroPi and it was a collaboration between ESA and the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

Astro Pi projects for kids. And good opportunity to learn about the ISS along the way.

I do have a pretty good set of tools though. custom pios by guysoft is pretty slick. You give it a starting .img, it mounts it as a filesystem, it them emulates an arm system and runs the image on the builder machine. I write bash scripts to install the stuff I want on the image, and load any config files, etc. Then the filesystem is saved as a new img.

On the other end of the spectrum there are tools like CustomPiOS that help you to get going really quickly, but they may not give you the flexibility you want. https://github.com/guysoft/CustomPiOS

It seems to really depend on the OS you install. I've had raspbian run horribly, some kioskOS's run ok, currently have a custom OS based on rasbian lite running and it's not too bad. Something like these: https://github.com/guysoft/CustomPiOS or https://github.com/TheLastProject/minimalKioskOS .

All of this is made possible by CustomPiOS, a tool that opens, modifies, and repackages pre-existing ARM images (usually a Raspbian / Raspberry Pi OS image downloaded from the official website).
