> Come to think about it, I don't think it works as an "editor" in HTML text fields?

Vimium - Vim extension for your browser
I used to use the itsalltext extension that did exactly that, but sadly it's not compatible with newer versions of Firefox anymore. The readme recommends GhostText which I haven't tried.

I'm also on team no remap. I don't use hjkl anymore and instead have a nav layer bound to where hjkl would be when I hold a thumb key down. I also use https://github.com/easymotion/vim-easymotion Bound to norm s.

window switching and splitting
For switching: I suggest you try easymotion. Basically it lets you jump (or I'd like to call it teleport) to anywhere on screen even across visible windows. I cannot imagine my workflow without it.
What are some alternatives?
GhostText - 👻 Use your text editor to write in your browser. Everything you type in the editor will be instantly updated in the browser (and vice versa).
hop.nvim - Neovim motions on speed!
cli - The command line vault (Windows, macOS, & Linux).
vim-sneak - The missing motion for Vim :athletic_shoe:
vimium-everywhere - OS-wide Keyboard navigation for Linux and Windows
leap.nvim - Neovim's answer to the mouse 🦘
Surfingkeys - Map your keys for web surfing, expand your browser with javascript and keyboard.
vimium - The hacker's browser.
vime - Using Vim as an input method for X11 apps
quick-scope - Lightning fast left-right movement in Vim
wasavi - wasavi is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. wasavi changes a textarea element to virtual vi editor which supports almost all the vi/ex commands.
lightspeed.nvim - deprecated in favor of leap.nvim
