Can you determine filetype by CID?
It looks like the bitswap protocol doesn't support range requests, you can only request a whole block of data. But I'm not sure whether a file consists of one block or many blocks.

How do I make IPFS work right again?
I am sorry that I couldn't be of more help. Perhaps cloning the github repo https://github.com/ipfs/ipfs-companion, entering developer mode, and manually creating an extension will resolve your issue.
