How does i3status print
It sounds like you're asking how i3status rewrites the existing output line when you run it in a terminal. It and other programs that do this (e.g. long running commands with progress bars) use terminal escape codes. The relevant source line (as best I can tell) is at https://github.com/i3/i3status/blob/30a32cce3a16e6c79a81aad467cfe13c12e688cb/i3status.c#L662
