I also use a scratchpad terminal. $mod+i either launches the terminal or toggles its visibility. Have a look at my config file (I use chezmoi to manage to dotfiles but you should get the idea without knowing chezmoi). The "hard" work is done by the i3-launch-or-toggle script.
