Self Hosted Ad Blockers?
6 projects | reddit.com/r/selfhosted | 14 Jan 2022
Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, you can also load the blocklists directly onto your hosts. For example, hblock (https://github.com/hectorm/hblock) has a few scripts to format its blocklist for your platform. The StevenBlack list's github page has instructions for adding to a range of platforms and links to several hosts/blocklist managers (https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts). You can also point your router at an adblocking public DNS such as https://adguard-dns.com/en/public-dns.html (free) or https://nextdns.io/ (might cost). Lastly, depending on what router you run, you could load the host lists directly onto the router.
Cutting specific pieces from a text file

I made a small script to keep my hosts file more or less up to date with respect to this one in github, the problem I have is that it also block a couple of pages I don't want to block (e.g. Reddit) and I don't want to be deleting them from the list by hand every time it updates.

Like u/adrian_mxlinux mentioned, adding the addresses you want to block in etc/hosts is the easiest way. Learn more about etc/hosts here
Adding the Avoid list to hosts file

Incidentally I took the bulk of my hosts file from Steven Black's compilations here: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts, as suggested by Mental Outlaw here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA6A3oeocHY

Alternatively, you can also disable trackers on hosting level, which will work in every browser, though a little bit more complex to setup. See: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts Some people even configure a 'Pi Hole' to have all the wifi-traffic ad-free, though I couldn't manage to set this up with my Telenet router.
Ask HN: How do you avoid dopamine addiction on social media?

I have a pihole with everything blocked, and I (probably somewhat redundantly) use a hosts blocker (https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts) on my non-phone machines. It's annoying for the first day or two, but you get used to it really quickly.
Uncanny coincidence: This old anti-vaxx cowboy with 1.9K Facebook friends died of COVID-19 and his funeral looked EXACTLY like this cartoon he shared.

Hide a pihole on their network (can be on wifi) and set it as their local DNS server. Add the usual ad and malware blocking lists but also be sure to include one of Steven Black's lists. The one that blocks "fakenews + gambling + social" would be good. Kills everything from the wild & crazy fake news sites through to just-plain-crazy fox news, kills facebook and other social media. They'll go through withdrawal of course but after a good period of detox maybe they'll find some balance?

Also there's OpenSnitch for Linux, available here:
I don't use it all the time but it is occasionally useful (or just satisfies my curiosity about what's phoning home)8 projects | news.ycombinator.com | 1 Jan 2022
right, I used to have a firewall that could whitelist apps in the 90s... iptables can't even do that as far as I know... but there is https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch that I still need to try (I no longer use Windows).
OpenSnitch import rules
1 project | reddit.com/r/linux4noobs | 25 Dec 2021
I'm using OpenSnitch firewall for openSUSE Tumbleweed and it only allows me to export my rules to save them. Never to import them. I see no option and I don't know if it's possible to do. Documentation doesn't say anything. Anyone using this knows how can I import my previous rules from the .csv file?

What are the best network ad-blockers (ease of installation, performance, customizability, documentation) that I can use to shift ad-blocking from Chrome to a network device (or docker container). Is it Pi-hole? Anything else?

Unpopular opinion: Linux doesn't suffer from lack of software, but rather, offers better alternatives to windows/mac software.
1 project | reddit.com/r/linuxmasterrace | 14 Dec 2021
"Better" is subjective. And in many categories, I agree with you overall. There are ofc some places where Windows has better more functional and more stable software (application firewalls for instance). Linux does have them but many of the alternatives don't work/require a lot of effort to get going and the one that does isn't as good stable and feature-rich. Ofc the Linux one is FOSS which I appreciate a lot but that doesn't negate the other qualities. Besides afw's, I've seen a few other niche areas where Windows has more options (that unfortunately don't work well in Wine) such as locally installed tax software (some people don't like doing it on websites) and legal software (writing wills, business contacts, etc).
does pop os sell its users data?
1 project | reddit.com/r/pop_os | 7 Dec 2021
Here is something I noticed about POP OS, Let me start by saying I LOVE POP OS, but this was concerning for me so I UNINSTALLED Firefox. Install Opensnitch a soft firewall, https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch , its an excellent firewall and put you in control of ALL connections in and out of your OS with a ez GUI, on a Fresh install of POP OS, it will prompt you for Mozilla Firefox trying to phone home with in minutes after install is complete without even launching Firefox. The weather widget/feature in POP OS is somehow tied into Mozilla and tries to phone home etc, and like other folks said Mozilla Firefox by default phones home and collects data about you, you have to disable it. I removed Firefox and the weather widget feature quit working.

Now, I will make the effort to reply to your comment: you tell me this is not a graphical firewall, then I kindly invite you to go see this issue. I'll save you a click: title is "Headless version of OpenSnitch?", and the reply is: "no, you need a GUI".
