Install on USB stick, boot with "toram", write changes on shutdown to usb stick
from the top of my head you could use easy2boot to boot live ISOs (multiple for if one doesnt boot on a given system) and have a reserved space for files on the USB itself; if you're up for it you could create your own live ISO with penguins-eggs from a pre-existing install or have a fresh install with all the programs you might need.

yes, derivaties are supported and it's enought easy to add them, I have not time to check everithing but included there is a simple YAML file derivaties.yaml who can be extended.
