gitbook VS Exercism - Scala Exercises

GitBook is a well-known online platform for developing, sharing, and publishing technical documentation. Although it’s not open source, it offers free and paid plans, with the free plan having limited features and functionalities. The paid plans unlock more features, such as custom domains, team collaboration, and advanced analytics.

A buddy of mine started looking at https://www.gitbook.com/

GitBook hasn't been open source since October 2018 (https://github.com/GitbookIO/gitbook) and software is usually judged by its most recent version. GitBook in its current form is a proprietary web service.

VSCodium does exclude the proprietary features of Visual Studio Code, but I don't see how that should disqualify VSCodium from being open source. In fact, I use VSCodium frequently and I am satisfied with its feature set. VSCodium is also maintained by someone who is not employed by Microsoft, so I don't think it's fair to say that it is intentionally designed to be inferior to Visual Studio Code.

GitBook is a collaborative documentation tool that allows anyone to document anything—such as products and APIs—and share knowledge through a user-friendly online platform.

Contributors and collaborators will do PR through code programming or using the design block builder gitbook.com

Nice, this reminds me of Exercism, which I wish was more widely known since they seem to be good folks. (disclaimer, I donate to them)

Exercism, the free programming learning platform has initiated a challenge named: 48in24.

Last year, Exercism put together the #12in23 challenge. The goal was to learn a new programming language each month throughout the year. I was one of 135 people who completed the challenge, and I learned a lot along the way!

The list of languages contains every language on Exercism, excluding ones that I've used before, web languages, or ones that I can't download for some reason.

Learning by doing, with the help of mentors. Excellent way to learn a next language (as you are already familiar with the programming concepts).

Exercism is pretty good for beginners with some programming language, they are open source and worth contributing to.

My initial thought was to actually use GitHub to store the content. Either on Markdown or JSON - to have some version control. I like how Exercism [1] does it. But I thought it would be hard for teachers - unfamiliar with Git - to update lessons.

Then, I thought about implementing a version control system for the project but I felt I was overcomplicating things for an MVP. But I like the idea of having some kind of version control to improve collaboration.
