Is anyone working on a federated Discord?
Although not written in Rust, Fosscord would be a great self-hosted replacement to Discord. But it's currently in very early stages of development so not yet production ready.

You can't buy nitro if you are in Russia .....
Just use Fosscord

Discord support is ignoring requests for appeals
- Fosscord, something thats trying to replicate Discord, open source (their client as of now is just Discord, I recommend) - Matrix, a decentralized federated chat network. - Guilded, owned by Roblox (known for horrendous moderation and support) but overall a good platform. - Telegram, requires a phone number (but takes VOIP), I've used it before. Definite hub for gore/scams but as long as you know what to avoid, it's alright
- Does anyone know any good alternatives to Discord?
- In case the Discord servers are censored, then the Fosscord, a WIP decentralised clone of Discord with backwards compatibility to the latter, can be used as a backup along with Matrix.
-
FYI: Avoid the "Discord Linux" server
I believe you can do it with Fosscord but from my understanding it's not ready yet.

What do you wish you could self-host?
Also fosscord is a nice discord clone

Chrome says nom-nom
hey have you heard of fosscord? it lets you run your own backend instances of discord, and it uses a slightly modified client to use the backend instead
- A program similar to Discord but respecting privacy?

Why Bitcoin Free Open Source Software Matters
As for other licenses, you must check them individually. "Open source" has lots of meanings and sub-branches, so you must pay attention to the fine details. Jitsi, for instance, allows you to do anything with their code – including commercial use: https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi/blob/master/LICENSE
What if it's a software only project that you are creating out of an open source project? For example if I use the code for Jitsi to make my own telephone app with a twist, will I be unable to sell the app?
What are some alternatives?
When comparing fosscord and jitsi you can also consider the following projects:
